America is home to an amazing array of turtles and tortoises. Like other species around the world, many of them are threatened and at risk of disappearing forever. This piece is the second in a series that focus intimately on these animals.
The Story: This painting was inspired by some of the very same trips to eastern Michigan visiting North American Wood Turtles. Depicted is the fragile ecosystem in which these striking Spotted Turtles live. Floating marsh and sedges grow like a blanket on slow moving water. Here Fringed Willowherb (Epilobium ciliatum) and the Northern Bluet Damselfly (Enallagma annexum) are common and shown along with the striking female Spotted Turtle (Clemmys guttata).
