This original painting is of the critically endangered Pyxis arachnoides. The spider tortoise is endemic to the deserts and spiny forests of Madagascar where they coexist with Astrocheyls radiata. Habitat loss, consumption and illegal export is threatening the survival of this beautiful species of tortoise.
